约翰洛克写作竞赛（John Locke Essay Competition）从极富趣味性和挑战力的写作题目出发，旨在培养参赛者的议论文写作能力，考察参赛者对于不同学科领域独立深刻的见解、广博的认知、清晰的说理能力、批判性地分析思维能力和说服力。
参加John Locke写作竞赛可以积累知识，提高论证技巧。评委们将从七个学科类别中的每一个类别中选出他们最喜欢的文章，以及一个适合15岁以下儿童的低年级组别，还会从哲学、政治、经济学、历史、心理学、神学和法律这七个学科中选出一篇“最佳论文”。参赛者更容易被牛津、剑桥、普林斯顿、哈佛、耶鲁、斯坦福、芝加哥、加州伯克利等名校录取。
