The past few years have witnessed an increment in the number of cars and motorcycles in cities. The wider use of these modes of transportation has worsened urban traffic conditions, but city dwellers still value them a lot.
The reasons for their continuous use of automobiles and motorcycles are multifold. On the one hand, private vehicles provide residents with far more comfortable journeys than public means of transportation do. In some cities, the public transport systems are unsatisfactory as the stations have been in disrepair for years. As a result, the trains and subways are always crowded during rush hours and even smelly in summer times. On the contrary, cars and motorcycles guarantee a far more pleasant environment where travellers can enjoy ample space and clean equipment. On the other hand, owning private vehicles provides users with greater freedom to travel wherever they desire. It is possible that travellers are discouraged from using public transport due to a scattering of subway stations and bus stops, which makes them unable to reach their destinations directly. For this instance, citizens need to walk a considerable distance or transfer between modes of transportation.
There are a number of feasible solutions to this problem. Firstly, governments are supposed to improve the public transportation system to make it more accessible to the general public. The better the environment and service of public transportation, the less likely it is that citizens choose to drive their own cars and motorcycles. Secondly, laws and regulations governing the usage of private vehicles can be introduced and implemented to efficiently manage the traffic flow. For example, some cities have been imposing traffic restrictions based on odd-even license plate rules to control the number of cars on the road. However, this policy does little to satisfy citizens’ basic need for travel, and thus individuals continue to rely heavily on private cars. Therefore, it is evident that the traffic concerns in urban areas need to be addressed by the perfection of the system.
Overall, cars and motorcycles possess irreplaceable advantages in everyday life. Hopefully, the traffic problems can be solved with improvements in the transport system.
